The world gives us a very specific blueprint for a successful life. They tell you that success is measured by the millions in your bank account, the title on your door, and the fame attached to your name.
And for a very long time... I bought that blueprint completely. I let society dictate my worth.
But to understand why I chased it so desperately, you have to know where I started. I didn't come from wealth. I came from nothing. I grew up watching my mother—a laundrywoman who couldn't read or write—toiling day and night just to keep us alive. I was too young to provide, so I made a silent vow. I promised myself I would get a degree, climb the ladder, and force the world to respect us.
And I did it.
By the age of 27, I was working as a real estate broker in Dubai, hitting millions a month. I was living la vida loca. But the recession hit, and that money vanished. When I came back to the Philippines, I was hungrier than ever. I climbed to the top of the corporate ladder, but even that wasn't enough. I wanted to be the boss.
So I launched my own empire. I launched Go Shopping. I wanted to prove to everyone—and to myself—that I had made it. I was featured on national TV. The news called me the "young entrepreneur launching the newest innovation." I was making millions. I was revered by my peers. I was practically wearing a halo of success.
But building an empire on the foundation of ego is like…
When the businesses collapsed, I didn't just lose the millions. I lost my integrity, my dignity, and the people I loved. But the most terrifying casualty of all? I lost myself.
When the money and the titles were stripped away, my definition of success went with them. I was left in the dark, contemplating ending my own life, convinced I was an absolute failure.
But then... the dawn broke.
In the moment I finally decided to get up off the floor—in that very moment when I looked in the mirror and admitted, "Neil, you are at fault too"—something profound shifted inside me.
I realized that success is not a destination you arrive at when you hit a financial quota. Success is not the end product. It is the by-product of how you live.
The moment you admit your greatest failure, and bravely forgive yourself... that is success. The moment you choose to rise up and do things differently... that is success.
I am no longer on the road to success. I am living inside…
My success is no longer anchored to the numbers society demands. It is anchored to my conscience. It is anchored to the peace I feel when I close my eyes at night.
People ask me, "If you don't care about the money anymore, why are you building a new business empire in Brazil?" The answer is simple. I no longer need the empire to make millions before I feel successful. The moment I gave birth to this new concept, the moment I decided to trust humanity again, I succeeded.
I tore up society's blueprint. And tomorrow, as we close this diary... I am going to hand the pen to you.
