There is an old saying that goes: "You cannot heal in the same environment that broke you." For five years, after a series of failed businesses and shattered trust, my absolute mantra was to rise from the exact spot where I stumbled. I thought it showed resilience. I thought staying planted in the ashes was a sign of strength.
But if I am being brutally honest with myself, and with you... a huge part of my decision to stay was pride.
My initial attempts to bounce back weren't really for me. They were designed for the people who betrayed me. I wanted them to see me succeed. I let pride take the wheel, and because pride always comes with a blindfold, I stumbled again.
It was a terrifying awakening. I realized that the environment I was desperately trying to conquer was actually suffocating me. It was deterring my growth. I needed to pull up my roots and plant them in a soil where nobody knew my name.
Some people might call that running away. But there is a massive difference between running away out of fear, and leaving to chase a much bigger destiny.
So, I packed my bags. And I crossed the globe to Brazil
Stepping off the plane in Rio de Janeiro was a leap of faith into an entirely new universe.
It is a place where I don't speak the native language. The culture is completely different. The air feels different. But the most intoxicating part of landing on foreign soil is the absolute anonymity. Everything was reset. My mind. My heart. My soul.
For the first time in years, I stood in a room where nobody knew my past, my failures, or my scars. There was no judgment. No drama. No explaining to do. In that beautiful, unfamiliar space, I could finally take a deep breath and simply be Neil.
Brazil is massive. The opportunities here are endless if you are brave enough to chase them. And as I began to lay the foundation for my new tech company here,
I realized that the pain of my past was actually the…
After being betrayed by the people I trusted most, the easiest thing to do would have been to build a cold, isolated business. But instead, I started developing a new social platform—one entirely focused on genuine, organic connections and shared rewards. Because despite everything, I still believe in the power of people coming together. I still believe that when we share our authentic lives, everybody wins.
But my vision didn't stop at technology. I also started laying the groundwork to help other Filipinos cross borders. I wanted to build a bridge for my countrymen to find their own greener pastures, because I know exactly what it feels like to need a new horizon.
I am miles away from the Philippines, but the beautiful, terrifying experiences of my homeland will always connect me to my roots. After all, I am a Filipino. We are built for survival. We are defined by our resilience.
My ultimate vision is to create something on the global stage that my fellow Filipinos can point to and say, "One of us built that." The struggles are still here. The challenges in Rio are bigger and bolder. But I am ready for them. I am here for a purpose. I am here to plant a new seed of hope in foreign soil... and watch an empire grow.
